Founded in 1949, the School of Mechanical Engineering of Dalian University of Technology (DUTME) is one of the most influential personnel cultivation and research bases in China. Since its establishment, DUTME always adheres to the tenet of Fostering Virtue Through Education and the motto of To Disseminate Virtue and to Investigate the Way of Things, To Study Extensively and to Practise Earnestly. Aiming to cultivate top talents, build world-class discipline, forge first-tier scientific research platform and establish world-famous school, DUTME achieves excellence in personnel cultivation, scientific research, social services and other aspects.

DUTME is one of the top schools of this university in terms of scale and research ability, with a total of 3989 faculty members and students, including 238 academic staff, 651 Ph.D candidates, 1715 postgraduates and 1385 undergraduates. The Mechanical Engineering Discipline ranked A level (top 2% to 5%) in the 4th round of China Discipline Evaluation and selected in the second stage of double world-class project, becoming one of the best disciplines of DUT.

DUTME keeps attracting and cultivating quality personnel, building a high-level faculty team led by prominent academicians. The School has 163 full-time professional staff, 82 out of whom are professors/research fellows, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, 2 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 National High-level Leading Talents, 22 National Young Talents, 2 national candidates of Millions of Talents Project, 1 National Outstanding Teacher. DUTME also possesses 6 national and provincial teaching and research team. Particularly, the High-Performance Precision Manufacturing Research Team won the first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

DUTME provides abundant educational resources featured in personnel cultivation, including 1 first-level discipline doctoral programs and 7 second-level discipline doctoral programs. The undergraduate major of “Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation” is a national specialty, having selected in the first stage of Double Ten Thousand Project for first-class undergraduate specialty construction. The School is also known for its teaching achievements, 3 awards of second prize at National level and 9 awards of first prize at provincial level. Textbooks written by DUTME faculty such as Mechanical Manufacturing Equipment Design(also known as Metal Cutting Machine Tools) and Modern Engineering Drawing(also known as Engineering Drawing) have published over 1 million copies. Meanwhile, textbooks such as Fundamentals of Manufacturing Technology and Descriptive Geometry won the outstanding textbooks of the First National Teaching Materials Construction Awards. The School also plays an important role in cultivating innovative and practical abilities with the establishment of 7 National First-class Courses, 4 National Teaching Centers/Bases, 3 National Virtual Teaching and Research Offices.

DUTME devotes itself to social advancement, producing a number of high-level original research achievements. The School undertakes a multitude of national scientific research tasks in fields like high-performance manufacturing, precision and ultra-precision machining, micro/nano manufacturing, intelligent mechatronics and major equipment design, having taken good advantage of one billion research fund in the past five years. DUTME has won more than 80 STEM prizes at provincial and ministerial level, 7 of which ranked the top at national level, including 2 first prizes of the State Technological Invention Award, 1 first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award(Innovative Groups) and 4 second prizes of the State Technological Invention Award. Many of its research achievements have been transferred and applied in institutes and enterprises of key fields nationwide, such as the development of the Long March 5 Series Launch Vehicle, the first flight of airliner COMAC919, the lunar landing mission of Yu Tu rover, as well as major national projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and the West to East Natural Gas Transmission Project.

DUTME builds on a solid foundation for scientific research with a number of high-level platforms, such as the National Collaborative Innovation Center, 1 National Collaborative Innovation Center and 10 research bases at provincial and ministerial level.

The school is very inclusive and open to the outside world, continuing to advance international collaboration. DUTME has engaged in good partnership with universities and research institutes around the world, participating in projects like of the DUT-UCI Joint Program and Plan 111 Personnel-introducing Platform, which attracts 33 overseas professors to deliver guest lectures and/or co-supervise postgraduate students. Moreover, DUTME was the first to advocate the “Schoolfellow Friendship” Initiative, promoting collaboration about personnel cultivation with National University of Singapore and Waseda University (Japan), in order to explore a consistent talent training mode.

In pursuit of excellence, DUTME has sent a multitude of high-quality personnel to society. Over the past 70 years, the school has cultivated a total of 28,000 graduates, among whom are many distinguished alumni taking leadership roles in different areas, such as the former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Mr. Jianxing Wei, the former secretary of Liaoning Provincial Committee of the CPC Mr. Shizhen Wen, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Hongru Yu, Prof. Xingchu Xu, Prof. Changyu Shen, Prof. Zhenyuan Jia, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Prof. Guomao Yin,  Prof. Dongming Guo,  and entrepreneurs such as Dr. Runfeng Ni and Mr. Xianping Xu, etc.

In order to meet new demands of the new era, DUTME shoulders the new commission to cultivate first-class personnel and generate cutting-edge research achievements, devoting itself to the Strategy of Building a Manufacturing Powerhouse and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
